Cisco AP Power to dBm Tables

Just a short post to share a simple table that I knocked up for quickly referencing Cisco AP TX power levels (1-8 as shown on a WLC) to what they actually mean in terms of dBm.

This information can be handy for when building RF profiles for a specific environment or group of AP’s and also for validating that real world output powers match expectations for an AP, especially when you take into account the slightly higher permitted EIRP levels for the UNII-2 Extended band in most EU domain countries.

At the moment it only covers the 3602i-E and 1602i-E as those are what we are commonly using in our networks at the moment, I will add 1142n-E and 3502i-E at some point when I get a chance to extract the data from a WLC with some attached!

If anybody wants to do this themselves then simply run the following command on a WLC running 7.2.x or higher code:

"show advanced 802.11a txpower" For 5GHz Band
"show advanced 802.11b txpower" For 2.4GHz Band

    Thanks for these informations, can you give the country code for your AP. I believe that power level depends on it.

      These were from -E region AP’s set for UK operation, I believe that you are right and there are some subtle differences in a couple of EU countries, Germany being one I am aware of having slightly different legislation for some of the 5GHz DFS channels though for the most part most of the ETSI region conforms to these values as far as Cisco are concerned.

      It should also be noted that these are maximum TX power levels, the number of spatial streams in use, coding scheme etc. will all impact the level frames are actually sent at (Cisco does have some very good detailed spreadsheets showing this information).
